Mission Statement

Good Shepherd Catholic School is an inter-parish faith community that commits itself to excellence in education through the creation of a nurturing and stimulating environment that embraces and proclaims religious, academic, social, physical and aesthetic values.

Philosophy

The philosophy of Good Shepherd Catholic School (Preschool, K - 8 and School Extension Program) has as a priority the fostering of an environment wherein each student is given opportunities to understand that they are created, loved and redeemed by God. Because the staff recognizes the uniqueness of each child, we focus our collective concern on the entire life of the student: intellectual, spiritual, moral, social, psychological, and physical.

We support families, the first educators of children, as they encourage students to become involved, responsible and contributing members of the church and the world. Through our Christ-centered curriculum, we guide students of varied abilities toward lifelong learning, academic excellence and responsible moral decision-making.

School Profile

Good Shepherd Catholic School (PS-8) is located on the border between Soquel and Santa Cruz, and is a joint venture of three Catholic parishes: Saint Joseph's in Capitola, Resurrection in Aptos, and Star of the Sea in Santa Cruz. Founded in 1963, and including an active preschool and an effective extended-day program, the school is designed to match the needs of families who wish an affordable Catholic education for their children in the context of a nurturing and values-based environment.

Curriculum

Good Shepherd Catholic School supports a policy of total education for its students with the Catholic religion as its center and foundation. As a Catholic school, we are committed to the formation of Christian values as well as academic excellence. This commitment challenges students and parents to participate in the formation of a positive and moral learning environment. Each student at Good Shepherd Catholic School is assigned to a homeroom. In kindergarten through grade five, students have the homeroom teacher for a majority of their subjects. Grades six through eight have homeroom time every day, but are departmentalized. Teachers follow the curriculum of the Diocese of Monterey which in turn is based on California State Frameworks. The curriculum for kindergarten through grade eight includes reading, language arts, math, science, social studies, religion, Spanish, computers, and physical education. Students in kindergarten through grade six also receive regular instruction in art and music while these classes form part of the Fine Arts program in the junior high.

Accreditation

Good Shepherd Catholic School is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and the Western Catholic Educational Association (WCEA).
